Gluten free banana bread made with almond flour and loaded with chocolate. For extra chocolatey goodness, melt some extra chocolate until velvety smooth and drizzle it on top!

Last Wednesday was national banana bread day. I honestly had no idea but just so happened to whip up some loaded chocolate swirl banana bread for my kids (ages 2 and 4). They were so excited for this recipe and helped me make it. There were some stray egg shells and a few ingredients missed the bowl, but they were so thrilled to be in the kitchen with me.

The nice thing about bananas is that they are naturally sweet and so you don't need much added sweetener to make banana bread. I don't keep refined sugars in my kitchen, so I use honey to sweeten the bread a little bit. Of course, the dark chocolate chips add a little sweetness too.

This banana bread is gluten free and made with whole food ingredients. It makes a nice occasional treat. Make sure to use ripe bananas for this recipe because the starches have broken down a little, making them more sweet. Ideally, they should have at least a few brown spots.

    Getting that Perfect Swirl

What I love about this bread is the small bursts of chocolate swirled into the bread. To achieve this, you will want to break up the batter and the melted chocolate into two halves. Pour the first half in and then fold the chocolate in. Make sure not to over stir or you will have a more solid chocolate bread. Then repeat this step with the rest of the batter and melted chocolate.

    What You Will Need

    2 cups almond flour

    1 tsp salt

    1 tsp baking soda

    1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 ½ cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3 bananas)

mashed banana to make banana bread

    3 eggs

⅛ cup coconut oil room temperature

    2 tsp vanilla extract

    2 tbsp raw honey

1 cup dark chocolate chips melted

melted chocolate for loaded chocolate swirl banana bread

2-3 tbsp dark chocolate chips for sprinkling on top

How to Make Loaded Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread

    Preheat the oven to 300°F.

Line a loaf pan with parchment paper and set aside. Something that helps the paper adhere to the pan is rubbing the inside of the pan in oil first.

In a stand mixer or mixing bowl, add the almond flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt and mix together.

Next, add the mashed bananas, coconut oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and honey. Mix until well combined.

Pour half of the batter into the loaf pan. Spoon half of the melted chocolate on top and then fold the chocolate into the batter. Repeat this step with the remaining batter and melted chocolate.

Sprinkle chocolate chips on top and place in the oven to bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

You will know the banana bread is done when a toothpick should come out of the center clean (although there might be a little melted chocolate on it). Remove from the oven and enjoy while its warm.

For this type of banana bread, I like to slice it thick to reduce crumbling and spread butter or nut butter on top.
